Oregon State Baseball wins game 2 of Stanford series

STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon State offense tallied 25 hits – the most in nearly a decade – to tie a school record with the Beavers 18th consecutive win after defeating No. 11 Stanford, 15-7, Saturday at Sunken Diamond.

The 18-game win streak ties the 1951 and 1962 teams, and Oregon State improved to 23-1, matching the ’62 team for the best start through 24 games. The Beavers are 8-0 in Pac-12 Conference play, while Stanford dropped to 14-8 overall and 2-3 against league foes.

The 15 runs were the most scored in a conference game since the Beavers defeated UCLA, 16-3, in 2005. The 25 hits, meanwhile, were two shy of the school record of 27 set in 1954 against Washington. It is the most in a single game for the Beavers since OSU finished with 25 in 2008 against San Diego State.

KJ Harrison set a career-high with four hits, also driving in four runs, to help pace the Beavers offensively. Steven Kwan reached base four times – tying a career-best with four hits and also receiving an intentional walk during Oregon State’s seven-run eighth.

In all, eight different Beavers finished with multi-hit efforts. Nick Madrigal extended his hit streak to 16 games with a 3-for-6 day, while Michael Gretler, Jack Anderson and Cadyn Grenier had three hits apiece. Trevor Larnach and Adley Rutschman pitched in with two hits apiece.

Gretler, Anderson and Zak Taylor all drove in two runs apiece.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead thanks to a four-run second after sending nine to the plate. The Cardinal, however, scored two in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

Then, it was time to cue the comeback.

The Beavers pulled to within one, 6-5, via a Madrigal single in the fifth, then tied the game when Grenier tallied a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Beavers went ahead for good in the seventh when Harrison hit a sac fly and Gretler drove in a run via a double down the left field line.

The Cardinal added a run in the seventh, but OSU scored seven in the eighth to take a commanding lead.

Brandon Eisert worked three innings of relief, improving to 2-0 on the year. The freshman allowed three hits and a run while striking out three. Tyler Thorne received the loss for Stanford, dropping to 1-1 after giving up five hits and four runs in 2 2/3 innings.

9-Plus To The Plate Twice

Oregon State sent at least nine batters to the plate twice in Saturday’s win. Nine batted in the second, and OSU scored four runs. OSU plated seven in the eighth – the team’s second-most in a single inning this season – after sending 10 the plate. The Beavers have sent nine or more to the plate six times this season.

Still Chasing History

Oregon State’s 18th-straight win tied the 1951 and 1962 teams for the longest in program history. Past that, the conference record for consecutive victories is 23 by Arizona State in 1988. The NCAA Division-I record is 34 wins, achieved by Florida Atlantic in 1999 and Texas in 1977.

Matching ‘62

Oregon State’s win kept the Beavers on pace with the 1962 team, which started the season at 23-1. The ’62 club lost its 25th game, 10-9, to Washington State.

About That Second Inning

The Beavers have been consistent in starting out strong this season, and that continued Saturday. OSU’s four runs pushed the season total to 20 in the frame this year, compared to six for opponents. The Beavers have outscored teams 49-10 in the first two innings combined.

Harrison & Madrigal With Big Weeks

Nick Madrigal has recorded seven hits, three runs, five RBI and a double over three games this week. KJ Harrison, meanwhile, has six hits, five RBI and one double – he did not play Tuesday at Saint Mary’s.

Series Win At Sunken

The win sent the Beavers to their 12th straight victory at Sunken Diamond. Oregon State has won every series at Stanford since 2005, seven in all.

Starting Pitchers

Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision. Oregon State starter Bryce Fehmel worked three innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Stanford starter Erik Miller was chased after only 1 2/3 innings. The lefty exited after allowing seven hits and four runs.

Short Start

Stanford starter Erik Miller worked just 1 2/3 innings, the shortest start by an Oregon State opponent this season. Duke’s Mitch Stallings had been the shortest, on opening day, when he went two innings, allowing five hits and six runs.

Keeping A Pac-12 Streak Alive

Oregon State has now won 12 consecutive games in Pac-12 Conference play dating back to the 2016 season. The Beavers won the finale at USC in 2016, followed by a sweep of UCLA to end the year. This year, the Beavers have swept Arizona and Arizona State before taking the first two at Stanford,
