It was no secret that Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep cornerback Deshon Wilson was leaning towards Oregon State, but it was a surprise to see him commit this early.
Wilson, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound three-star recruit, has not visited Oregon State, but he saw a great opportunity in Corvallis, so he figured, why wait?
"Honestly, I felt like I'd be a great fit for Oregon State in their football program," Wilson told BeaversEdge.com. I could play four years there and have a big role in their defense. After discussing it with my family, we felt that Oregon State is one of the top schools out there, so we made that decision."
Wilson was hoping to make his first trip to Oregon State this weekend for a visit, but he is taking his SAT on Saturday morning. He still plans on making that trip sometime in the near future.
It's well documented that Oregon State landed four 2017 signees that played for the TMP Mafia 7v7 team, based in northern California. Wilson also plays for TMP, and he said that his connection with those guys played a role in his decision to commit to the Beavs.
"It was big," Wilson noted. "Of course, we played together, and those guys were in my ear telling me to commit to Oregon State. At the same time, I went with my gut and knew that Oregon State would be a great fit for me. But it did play a big role."
Wilson plans on keeping the "TMP to Corvallis" train going.
"Oh yeah, no doubt," he said. "We're going to keep this TMP to Corvallis thing rolling."
Wilson has been in touch with cornerbacks coach Cory Hall since the Beavers offered him a month ago.
"We've talked a couple of times, and he feels like he could transition me into a nickel or safety, but he likes my style at corner," Wilson said. "We have a good relationship."
