THE COMMITMENT
It came as a bit of a surprise that Kentfield (Calif.) Marin Catholic quarterback Spencer Petras committed to Oregon State on Memorial Day. Sources indicated that Petras was leaning towards Cal with Petras growing up a Cal fan and has a relationship with former Cal quarterback Jared Goff, who played for Marin Catholic during his high school days.
However, Petras played his recruitment close to his vest and didn't even post on social media about his Oregon State visit a couple of weeks ago. While he was mulling between OSU and Cal, he decided that Corvallis was the best place for him to further his career.
"Yeah it was down to Cal and Oregon State and actually a couple of other schools as well," Petras told BeaversEdge.com. "I visited Oregon State about two weeks ago, and it totally blew me away how great of a place Corvallis was and how the football culture there is a special thing.
Petras also noted that he's 100% locked in with Oregon State and will graduate from Marin Catholic this December, allowing him to enroll at OSU in January and participate in spring ball in Corvallis.
He comes into a great situation at OSU as he won't be called on to compete for the starting job in 2018 with Jake Luton and Marcus McMaryion as the senior quarterbacks.
IMPACT ON OSU'S 2018 RECRUITING CLASS
Oregon State now has four 2018 commitments as Petras joins cornerback Deshon Wilson, outside linebacker Halid Djibril, and defensive tackle Isaac Hodgins.
Oregon State has their 2018 quarterback, and if the Beavs chose to just sign one 2018 quarterback, they have a very capable guy in Petras, but they can still look at guys like Jake Dukart and Brevin White. For my full breakdown of whether or not OSU will take a second 2018 quarterback, click here.
