The Beavers were back on the practice field today after taking Sunday and Monday off. Oregon State ended fall camp with their scrimmage on Saturday and are now in game prep mode for the season opener at Colorado State on August 26.
BeaversEdge.com football analyst Marcus Greaves provides his unique insight on the OSU football team in his practice report below!
Practice Nuggets from August 15
- Kee Whetzel was on the defensive line as hybrid defensive end/linebacker. Today, he showed why having these types of players will benefit the defense. This technique is paying off as they seem to have success getting pressure on the quarterbacks. Whetzel got to the quarterback three different times today, and when he didn't get get them, they felt his pressure.
- On the offensive side of the ball, Andre Bodden sliced through the defensive backs on a deep route and caught a perfect deep ball thrown by Darell Garretson for a touchdown. Bodden is making more and more big catches as well as finally blocking downfield. This is a great sign for the offense. The more the receivers can block a corner or a safety, the more big runs we are going to see from this talented backfield.
- Xavier Hawkins is another face that stood out today. Hawkins struggled early in his career with truly understanding the routes and schemes. His improvement was on full display today as Hawkins beat the defensive back David Morris on a deep route, and Garretson placed another perfect deep ball in the endzone for a touchdown.
- Jake Luton drove the offense down the field multiple times today and couldn't get them into the end zone twice when they were in the red zone the receivers dropped the ball. Luton delivered a couple of good passes to Villamin that were dropped.
- Kyle White is the standout player of the day. The former running back looks comfortable and confident in his position. He broke up 4 passes today thrown by Luton and Garretson. He covered senior Jordan Villamin most of the day, and it was impressive to see his confidence and how well he played against Villamin.
