2016 Recap
Other than Victor Bolden, the quarterback turned receiver was OSU’s best pass-catcher in 2016. This shouldn’t come as a surprise because Collins is one of the best pure athletes to ever play for Oregon State. His transition from QB-WR was a little bumpy, but he played well as a wide receiver, racking up 400+ yards receiving. Collins was dealt a devastatingly scary health blow after the UCLA game where he was hospitalized because of an illness. He didn’t play in wins vs Arizona and Oregon nor did he participate this spring.
2017 Outlook
When I sat down with Gary Andersen a couple of months ago, Andersen said that the “ideal” scenario was for Collins to redshirt in 2017. However, Collins will be playing in 2017 after all. If Collins is healthy, I think it’s a no-brainer to play and start him. With the departure of probable starter Hunter Jarmon, the Beavers could use another top-tier receiver and Collins is that guy. I’ve always been very high on him, and I think he has a tremendous junior season for the Beavers that sees him snagging 800+ yards with 10 touchdowns.
Greaves' take on Collins
Marcus Greaves will provide analysis for each player in the BeaversEdge Top 20 for 2017. Greaves played for Oregon State from 2014-2017 and joined the BeaversEdge.com staff as a football analyst.
A truly electrifying player for the Beavers - we have seen Collins play everything, from QB to RB to WR. He is a very deadly weapon for the offense. I like the position he is in, which gives him an opportunity to get the ball in open space more often and do what he does best. If he is at 100% for this season, it is great news for the Beavers. If not, someone is going to have to step up big time in order for the Beavers to compete in the PAC-12.
