Every recruiting class across the country has a "leader" of the class, who is the most vocal on social media and tries to help his future school recruit other prospects to the program.

Isaiah Smalls is that for Oregon State, but multiply what Smalls has done for Oregon State the past few months compared to normal class leaders times 50.

Between teasing fans about silent commits, tweeting just about every top recruit out there to "Build the Dam" with him, and overall just showing OSU love on social media -- despite OSU not having a head coach for nearly two months -- Smalls has been an incredible unofficial liaison for the Beavers.

Smalls was one of the first (probably THE first) prospect that new Oregon State head football coach Jonathan Smith reached out to. They spoke on Friday evening.

"It was good timing because he called me right when I got out of practice. I recognized the area code and knew it had to be someone from Corvallis," Smalls said. "We talked for a good 10 minutes, and the first thing he mentioned was that he noticed I was the leader of our class as far as helping recruit others.

"We talked mostly about why I committed to Oregon State and what I liked about Corvallis. He also mentioned that once things get situated he plans to come visit me sometime next week."

Smalls enjoyed his conversation with Smith.

"I like him. He seems like a cool guy," Smalls said. "He grew up here in So Cal as well so it’s nice to have a head coach that knows where I’m coming from."

Smalls tweeted out that he spoke with Smith, and mentioned that he liked "the plan [Smith] has for his program."

"He’s going to start re-recruiting us commits and getting to know us, then get ready to pick his assistants," Smalls explained. "I can’t really go into too much detail on the subject but he’s up to something."

It wasn't just a welcoming conversation between Smith and Smalls though. They got to talking about business, and that's doing what Smalls does best -- recruit prospects to Corvallis.

"We talked about one of our silent commits, but he didn’t want to take up too much of my time so we’ll finish that another day. He talked about recruiting kids from So Cal as well because that’s what he’s familiar with and mentioned that when he went to Oregon State guys from So Cal were successful when they played there.

"I wasn’t the only commit he talked to tonight, I think he talked to Jake Dukart and Isaiah Tufaga, but I’m not sure who else he talked to."
