MORAGA, Calif. – Nick Madrigal laced a 3-1 single back up the middle to cap off a three-run ninth inning, sending the top-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 4-3 win over Saint Mary’s Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
Down 3-1 entering the ninth, the Beavers strung together a rally. Cadyn Grenier extended the game with a bloop single to left, moving Adley Rutschman to third. Tyler Malone walked, then pinch runner Andy Armstrong moved to second when Andy Atwood also walked, putting the game at 3-2 in favor of the Gaels.
Armstrong served as the winning run when Madrigal singled off Saint Mary’s reliever Ken Waldichuk, sending the Beavers to third win in their last at bat in the last four games. It extended the team’s win streak to 16 games, the program’s longest since the 1962 team won 18-in-a-row.
Max Engelbrekt picked up the win with two scoreless innings, improving to 2-0. Jake Mulholland tossed a perfect ninth inning for his second save of the season.
Madrigal, Steven Kwan, Tyler Malone and Michael Gretler all finished with two hits to pace the Beavers (21-1 overall), who tallied nine off four Saint Mary’s pitchers. Malone picked up his first career two-hit game.
Gretler drove in the Beavers’ first run on a bloop single to left in the fourth, bringing in Kwan from third.
The Gaels (17-7) got on the board first thanks to a solo home run from Kevin Milam in the second. After Gretler’s single in the fourth, Saint Mary’s went ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Charles Zaloumis and single by Joey Fiske.
Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision.
Sam Tweedt started for the Beavers and worked 3 2/3 innings. The redshirt sophomore allowed seven hits and three runs, struck out two and walked one.
Saint Mary’s starter Joe Loeprich threw five innings of work, allowing four hits and a run. He struck out four.
Making History While In Game
Midway through the third inning, the Pac-12 Conference announced that KJ Harrison (Player) and Bryce Fehmel (Pitcher) won the weekly awards. It was the second straight week the Beavers swept the conference’s awards, becoming the first team since Arizona State in 1989 to do so in back-to-back weeks. ASU was a member of the Pac-10 South in 1989.
Brother Versus Brother
Brothers Nick Madrigal and Ty Madrigal squared off in the eighth inning. Ty Madrigal, a left-handed pitcher for Saint Mary’s worked an 0-1 count to Nick Madrigal before the Oregon State infielder laced a single to left.
Aiming For A Perfect Month
Oregon State improved to 14-0 in the month of March with one game remaining, Friday at Stanford. The Beavers are looking for their first perfect month – with 10 or more games played – dating back to 1982. The 2005 team went 10-1 in May, the closest over that stretch.
