Gary Andersen didn't spend a lot of time on the Pac-12 coaches teleconference call, but what he had to say was pretty intriguing.

The Beavers' head football coach was asked point blank about his team's quarterback situation, and Andersen noted that the Beavs could use multiple quarterbacks.

"I will say this, I'm not afraid to walk out and say that we have some tweaks in our scheme that would allow us to play two quarterbacks in certain situations to use the athleticism of Marcus (McMaryion) or Darell (Garretson)," Andersen said.

Garretson and McMaryion were the starting quarterbacks for the Beavers last season, and transfer quarterback Jake Luton seemed to be the No. 1 guy during spring practices.

Luton was the first quarterback to take reps during the portions of practice available to the media, and he also was the starter in the spring game.

"We have three guys, and it's a lot better than not having any," Andersen said. "We want to be able to get ourselves in a spot to find a quarterback that can make the game changing plays.

"The three kids can manage the game and have proven to be able to do that at the division one level. In the case of Marcus and in the case of Darell, they've proven that they can win games in this conference in the right setting."

In reading in between the lines, Luton seems to be the favorite to start at quarterback for the Beavers when they open the season at Colorado State on August 26.

"Three guys can manage the game, and we need to find the one who can make special plays and allow us to throw the ball better and score more points. It's a work in progress.

"It will be interesting to see how Jake, when he gets back to being fully healthy, which he was not in the spring, gets the summer underneath his belt and understands the offense. These other two guys will prepare extremely hard."

Luton was 13-of-21 for 118 yards and threw for one touchdown and two interception in Oregon State's spring game.

McMaryion was 9-of-14 for 126 yards and two touchdowns, and Garretson completed 8-of-11 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
