I give Smith a solid B+ because he has done just enough to peak the interest of Beaver Nation during his first seven days as the Beavers head man. After OSU got throttled in the Civil War by Oregon, it was apparent that Beaver football was at an all-time low.

However, that all changed when Smith got hired. From his opening press conference, he impressed me with his ability to speak with confidence about a place that he loved. I didn’t realize Smith was quite that good at public speaking and I think that’s why I really thought highly of him right away.

Lastly, I like how Smith has carried himself over the past week in public in front of the alumni and recruits. On the day of his press conference, he went to an alumni rally that night and then took the time to visit each of the recruits in OSU’s class to make sure that they were all solid.

From the time Gary Andersen left until now, Oregon State has lost just one commitment (Andy Koch) and that is really impressive, especially considering how many decommitments Oregon has had with their head coaching change. It speaks volumes of what Cory Hall and staff were able to do in the interim, and that has really benefitted Smith on the recruiting front.

Yes, he still needs to add several more recruits to this class, but he has a good core to build around, and Smith has done a very good job connecting with the commits and a few top targets too. Smith has done everything you could ask for on the recruiting front.

Once Smith started his press conference speech with "It is great to be home" I knew he was going to crush it, and he did. He discussed many key points and was very articulate and passionate in his responses to reporters.

Smith is already starting to assemble a pretty solid staff although none of the hires have been made official by the University. Landing Arizona offensive line coach Jim Michalczik was a home run hire.

I have to give Jonathan Smith a solid A. He's exceeded my expectations in the first week for sure.
