Washington State pushed late in the recruiting process of Arex Flemings, but the Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral wide receiver ended up sticking with his initial Oregon State commitment as he signed a National Letter of Intent in February.
Flemings will enroll at Oregon State this summer, and in the meantime, Flemings has been working at his craft to be ready for the adjustment to Pac-12 College Football.
"I've been studying the different little parts of the playbook and keeping my body and shape," Flemings told BeaversEdge.com. "I'm getting mentally prepared."
Flemings' workout partner is Washington State wide receiver Jamire Calvin, a one time Oregon State commit. Calvin and Flemings hoped to play at the same college, but they are happy with their decisions.
They are still as close as ever, but now their friendship has turned into a fun, competitive bond.
"I wanted to workout a lot on my route running - technical type stuff," Flemings continued. "I'm working on the basics to make sure my route running is clean; I'm focusing it on a lot. I'm making sure I'm healthy coming in, because injury is the last thing you want coming into camp."
Flemings made the trip up to Corvallis for Oregon State's spring game in March.
"It was a good experience to get up there and see the level of competition," he said. "It was good to see how the coaches interacted with the players."
Flemings was close with former OSU wide receivers coach Brent Brennan, who is now the head coach at San Jose State. Jason Phillips was hired as Brennan's replacement, and Flemings and Phillips have hit it off.
Since Flemings' recruiting process is over, he doesn't talk in-depth with Phillips, but they still check in with each other.
"Here and there - not too much, but I did get to talk to him in his office for a little bit [during the visit]," Flemings said. "I'm really comfortable with coach Phillips; we get along really well.
"I'm in a group chat with coach Phillips and all of the other receivers, so I get the every day notification of what's going on."
What does Flemings want Beaver fans to know about him?
"They should be excited to get a guy that's going to come in ready to work," answered Flemings. "I expect to make plays early and make an impact on the game in whatever way the coaching staff needs me to. They're getting a really exciting player."
