Calvin Tyler explains Oregon State decision

Oregon State lost a running back commitment in TJ Green on Tuesday, but they added a great one the same day as Silsbee (Tex.) running back Calvin Tyler announced his commitment to the Beavers.

The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder actually told the OSU coaching staff of his intention to commit last weekend during his official visit at Oregon State.

"I committed during the visit," Tyler told BeaversEdge.com. "I was talking to coach Lockette and he told me to ask him five questions that I wanted to know. So I asked him five questions, and then the last one was 'Coach, would you like for me to come here?' He said, 'I would love for you to come here.' And then I said, 'Coach, I'm coming.'

"The first test was already passed when I met him. I just wanted to get to the campus to see if it felt like home, and it did."

Oregon State came on late in Tyler's recruiting process as they offered him on January 13, but Tyler thought the timing was perfect.

"It was all God's timing," Tyler said. "Coach Phillips - that just got hired on to the staff; he saw my film when he was at Kansas. When [Phillips] found out that coach Lockette needed a running back, he came to my dad. They met on a Wednesday and that Friday they offered me."

Tyler met with Gary Andersen and was impressed with the Beavs' head man.

"After I had my meeting with coach Lockette, I met with coach Andersen, and he said he would love to have me there too," said Tyler. "I told him I would love to join."

The Oregon State staff likes what Tyler can bring to Kevin McGiven's offense.

"They like my speed, vision, and burst. I can catch out of the backfield too," Tyler said. "I'm a utility player; I can do it all - run the ball, run routes."

Tyler is locked in with his Oregon State pledge and will not be considering any other schools. He will sign a letter of intent on National Signing Day, February 1.

"I'm coming to Corvallis to stay in Corvallis. I'm coming to play for the fans, my teammates, and I'll play with my heart. I'm putting everything on the line. It's time to change things around in Corvallis."
