Game Story: Oregon State secures outright Pac-12 title after knocking off Cal

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 8/10 Oregon State women's basketball team secured the 2016-17 Pac-12 Championship outright Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers defeated California 71-56 on Senior Day at Gill Coliseum.
"I'm just really proud of this team and this crowd," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Cal played a great game. They hit shots and they made runs at us all afternoon. Our team did a great job to rally. I thought this was a perfect Senior Day for our group, it was a perfect ending to a fantastic regular season."
Oregon State improved to 27-3 with the win, setting a new Oregon State record for regular-season victories. The Beavers had previously locked down at least a share of their third-straight conference title with their win over Stanford on Friday, before claiming it outright on Sunday.
Senior Sydney Wiese went for 19 points, hitting four 3-pointers and dishing out six assists. Junior Marie Gulich went 7-for-11 from the floor to finish with 14 points and six rebounds.
Senior Kolbie Orum celebrated Senior Day with 11 points and four assists, while freshman Mikayla Pivec narrowly missed her first career double-double, going for nine points and eight rebounds.
Overall, Oregon State shot 47.2 percent in the contest, including 44.4 percent from 3-point range. The Beavers provided assists on 20 of their 25 made baskets and held a 39-22 advantage in rebounds.
Oregon State exploded out of the gate, hitting six of its first eight field goal attempts to go in front 17-4. The Beavers would go in front by as many as 14 in the opening frame, before ending the first quarter up 24-12.
The Beavers extended the edge to 16 early in the second period, but Cal battled back with a 12-1 run to get within five. Oregon State would stretch the lead back to double-figures late in the quarter, but the Golden Bears hit a three at the halftime horn to head to the locker-room down 41-34.
Oregon State's offense was clicking out of the break, as the Beavers extended the lead to 15 less than four minutes into the third quarter. The Beavers' would stay in control for the remainder of the period, taking a 59-43 advantage into the closing frame.
The Bears would surge again to open the fourth quarter, cutting it to nine, but Oregon State answered swiftly to return the lead to 14. Oregon State controlled the contest from there, taking the win by 15.
Oregon State will be the No. 1 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament, and will have a bye in the event's first round. The Beavers' first game of the tournament will be played Friday in Seattle, Wash. Full tournament seedings and game times will be announced Sunday evening.
