CORVALLIS, Ore. – Matthew Morrell struck out Shunsuke Sakaino with the bases loaded in the ninth to preserve Oregon State’s one-run lead and send the Beavers to a 7-6 win over CSUN Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The freshman right-hander came on with no outs and runners on first and second. He immediately retired Kevin Fitzer on a grounder to first. He then intentionally walked Nathan Barraza, then got Conner Stewart to foul out to catcher Tanner Smith.

Morrell, who got the save, then battled Sakaino to a 3-2 count before getting the lefty on the Beavers’ sixth strikeout to end the game. The win, Oregon State’s ninth-in-a-row, came after a seesaw battle, one that saw the lead change hands multiple times, including twice in the eighth inning.

Gavin Turley gave the Beavers the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning, singling between third and short on an 0-1 offering from CSUN reliever Joshua Romero. Turley’s single was made possible when Jacob Krieg, who ended the day with three hits, singled to center to tie the game at six.

The Matadors (9-5 overall) had taken the lead in the eighth when Roberto Gonzalez homered to right to drive in two in the top half of the inning.

The Beavers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two, highlighted on a two-run double by Micah McDowell. CSUN, however, took the lead with one run in the third and three in the fourth. OSU (14-1) tied the game in the fourth on a Jabin Trosky single, then went ahead 5-4 when Tanner Smith chopped a single to third in the seventh.

Romero was charged with the loss to drop to 4-1 on the year. He allowed three hits and two unearned runs.

The win went to Tyler Mejia, who allowed the home run in the eighth but picked up the final out of the inning. Morrell earned the save, his first of the year.

Krieg and Mason Guerra each had three hits to pace the OSU attack, which totaled 14 hits on the day. Trosky and Travis Bazzana finished with two apiece.
