WBB: The Beavs are rolling
No. 12 Oregon State had a big Pac-12 conference matchup against No. 20 Cal on Friday night, and the Beavers walked away with 66-56 win.
The score shows that it was a relatively tight contest, but the Beavs had control of the game in the second half.
OSU had three ladies that scored double digits: Mikayla Pivec scored a career high 19 points, Breanna Brown had a big second half on her way to 14 total points, and Sydney Wiese had an off game by her standards but still finished with 10 points.
Oregon State has a marquee matchup with No. 10 Stanford on Sunday at 5pm PT on the Pac-12 Network.
The Beavs are now 14-1 on the season and have won 11 straight contests. In that span, just three of the games were within a ten point margin.
BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 12/16 Oregon State women's basketball team notched its 11th-straight win and second-straight over a ranked opponent, as the Beavers topped No. 20/20 California 66-56 Friday evening in Berkeley, Calif.
"I was really pleased with our effort tonight, in our first true road game of the year," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I thought we got great performances throughout our lineup. Overall, I thought we saw some great leadership, to help weather the storm vs. Cal. We held them off the boards and limited them in transition. I'm really proud that this team was able to get a win on the road today."
Oregon State used a 12-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to take control of the game, and outscored Cal 16-8 in the third frame.
Freshman Mikayla Pivec filled the stat sheet, scoring a career-high 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the floor. The Lynnwood, Wash. native also tallied five rebounds and four assists. Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown matched a career-high with 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor.
Senior Sydney Wiese scored 10 points and dished out four assists. Marie Gulich went for nine points and eight rebounds, while Gabriella Hanson finished with eight points. Senior Kolbie Orum set a career-high with 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Beavers shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from the floor, and held Cal to 38.3 percent (23-for-60) shooting. Oregon State held a 42-32 advantage in rebounds.
The teams went back and forth early in the first quarter, with the Beavers taking a one-point edge into the game's first media timeout. Oregon State would go in front by as many as five in the opening frame, before the two sides headed to the second period level at 18.
The second quarter started with more of the same, as the two sides traded buckets, with neither team able to separate. Cal jumped in front by three late in the half, but Oregon State responded by scoring eight unanswered points to take a 34-29 lead into the intermission.
Pivec led the Beavers with 13 first-half points, as the Beavers shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. Overall the first half saw 10 lead changes.
Oregon State picked up right where is left off to start the third quarter, extending its run to 12-0 to go in front by nine. Overall, the Beavers held the Bears scoreless for a stretch of over seven minutes, spanning the second and third periods. Oregon State would continue to roll in the penultimate frame, stretching the advantage to 15. The Beavers would not look back from there, taking the victory by 10.
The Beavers are back in action Sunday, when they head across the bay for a matchup with No. 10/10 Stanford. That game will tip off at 5 p.m. and will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
