VID + Recap: Oregon State sweeps Cal

After a 10-2 win over Cal on Sunday, the consensus No. 1 team in the country, the Oregon State Beavers, have improved to 38-4 on the season and have been victorious in six of their last seven matchups.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Cadyn Grenier tripled, and Tyler Malone and Adley Rutschman each drove in two to send top-ranked Oregon State to a 10-2 win over California Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, sending the Beavers to a sweep of the Golden Bears.

Grenier’s triple highlighted a five-run fifth inning that sent Oregon State to a then 7-0 lead. Malone, meanwhile, went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, which both came on a single in that five-run fifth.

Overall, Oregon State tallied 10 hits off five California pitchers, and ended the three-game series with 29 runs. The three-game series also saw 10,567 fans through the gates at Goss Stadium, a three-game series record, surpassing the 10,138 against USC last weekend.

The win sent Oregon State to its 21st win in Pac-12 Conference play, and the Beavers are six games ahead of both Stanford and UCLA. OSU is 21-3 in league action – the Cardinal and Bruins are both 13-8 - and 38-4 overall. California, meanwhile, dropped to 21-24 overall and 12-12 in Pac-12 play.

Jake Thompson made his 12th start of the season, scattering nine hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. The redshirt junior struck out six and picked up his 10th win of the season – tying him for the national and Pac-12 conference lead.

His counterpart, Matt Ladrech, was charged with his second loss of the season after allowing seven hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Another 3K-Plus

Oregon State saw 3,551 fans at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field Sunday, pushing the series attendance to 10,567, setting a new three-game series record – surpassing the previous best of 10,138 against USC last weekend. Oregon State has now had 10 crowds of 3,000 or more this season. The Beavers have totaled 58,168 fans through 19 home dates this season – 20 games, with one counting as as a single-ticket doubleheader. That is an average of 3,061 per home date.

Pac-12 Magic Number

The Beavers’ win, coupled with the loss by Stanford at Arizona, put Oregon State’s magic number at two. The Beavers can clinch the Pac-12 title outright with two wins at Oregon or two losses by both Stanford and UCLA, which are each tied for second. Both have a 13-8 record in Pac-12 play.

Sweep Over Cal

The Beavers’ series sweep of California marked Oregon State’s third in its last five meetings with the Golden Bears.

Offensive Kind Of Series

The Beavers finished with 29 runs against California, the most in a three-game series by Oregon State this season – the previous high had been 25 against Stanford. Overall, the Beavers tallied those 29 runs on 31 hits.

Malone Off The Bench

Tyler Malone came off the bench as a pinch hitter and ended up 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI – thanks to a two-run single in the fifth. The two hits marked his second multi-hit effort of the season.

Thompson’s Masterful Season Continues

Jake Thompson gave up two runs for just the second time this season. His earned run average is at 1.20, a slight increase from 1.07 prior to the game. To say the least, he has been impressive in going 10-0 this season.
