Scrimmage Report

1. Both quarterbacks will play in the first game and possibly the first couple of games.

A new development in the quarterback competition, both Seth Collins and Marcus McMaryion will see time at quarterback in the season opener against Weber State and possibly the two games leading up to conference play.
Both quarterbacks split reps with the first offense going against the second defense, Collins led the first scoring drive which was catapulted by big catch-and-run by Jordan Villamin.
Collins also succeeded when the team worked on their red zone offense as he was able to pick up a big chunk of yards with his legs before finding Villamin again in the back of the end zone for a score. During the 63 play scrimmage Collins' official stat line was 2-for-4 for 75 yards and 17 yards rushing.
McMaryion had more passing attempts during the team period, completing 10-of-16 passes for 67 yards. He started off making big throws on third down to move the chains, but the majority of his passes were to the flats that resulted in little-to-no gains. He did thrive during the two-minute drill with the offense trailing by six. He orchestrated a drive making good passes to the side lines.
With neither Collins nor McMaryion able to separate themselves and with neither quarterback taking a snap in a live game, Andersen is not opposed to using two quarterbacks. He has studied and been in contact with Northwestern's coach Pat Fitzgerald on how he implemented the two-quarterback system in 2012 and 2013.
However, he does not want to have the quarterbacks looking over their shoulder each time they make an error.
"The last thing you want to do if you have two quarterbacks playing is if the kid makes a mistake, yank him every time he makes a mistake. That is just no way to operate. That's impossible."
2. Isaac Seumalo, Storm Barrs-Woods, Chris Brown back going full speed.
Many players have been held out of practices and the previous scrimmage as they nurse or recover from injuries. Isaac Seumalo, Storm Barrs-Woods and Chris Brown saw their first live action in several practices.
Isaac's leadership on the field was noticeable, after several poor possessions from the offense to start the scrimmage he came out yelling at the orange jerseys (quarterbacks) that their play was not good enough. The very next series the offense went down and scored a touchdown.
Barrs-Woods and Brown were not in their no-contact jerseys they wore all of last week, and went full contact, probably for the first time this fall. Barrs-Woods ran hard and aggressively finishing with 24 yards on three carries while Brown finished with 13 yards and a touchdown on three carries. Brown received a lot of praise from Andersen following the scrimmage for his ability to pick up the blitzes.
3. Jordan Villamin Saturday's big play maker.
In 2014, Jordan Villamin had a knack for making big, game-changing plays in the clutch. Whether it was his two touchdown performance against Utah or his 67-yard game-winning touchdown in the Beavers upset win over No. 6 Arizona State. After missing several practices, including last weeks scrimmage with concussion like symptoms, Villamin came up with several big plays on Saturday
When the offense was once again struggling to find its rhythm early on, it was Villamin who came up with the big play to get the offense rolling. He caught a 12-yard dig route then broke a tackle and split a pair of defenders and turned a medium gain into a big gain that put the offense inside the five yard line.
Then at the end of practice during the two-minute drill Villamin once again came up with the big gain when he hauled in a pass from Marcus McMaryion before getting tackled inside the 10-yard line. The offense would score the winning touchdown with 15 seconds left on the clock.
Officially Villamin finished with one catch for 63 yards, but that didn't count for the touchdown he scored during the red zone portion or the big gain he had in the two-minute offense.
Other Notes
• The defense spent the majority of the time in a 3-3-5 formation. Defensive ends Lavonte Barnett and Jaswha James would mix up their looks
• Andersen was pleased with the kickers and punters, naming Garrett Owens the starting kicker and Nick Porebski the starting punter.
• Andersen was disappointed with the amount of penalties committed by the team. During the scrimmage the team committed 10 penalties, many of them administrative penalties.
• Former OSU greats Steven Jackson, Yvenson Bernard and Ken Simonton were all in attendance for Saturday's scrimmage. Jackson gave the team a pre-scrimmage speech prior to the game.
Nick Mitchell only had one possession at quarterback, but he made the most of leading the first touchdown drive of the day, where he went 4-for-5 for 42 yards.
• Wide receivers Hunter Jarmon and Rahmel Dockery sustained injuries during the scrimmage. Jarmon's came early in the scrimmage when he was tackled awkwardly after a catch. He spent the rest of the practice with an ice bag on his knee and on a crutch.
Dockery's came during the two-minute drill when he sustain an injury away from the ball, which left him on the ground for several minutes, he then jogged off under his own power. Andersen said neither injury is serious.
• After the first scrimmage where Damien Haskins, Jaylynn Bailey and Ryan Nall received a bulk of the carries, Barrs-Woods, Brown and Deltron Sands saw most of the carries today. Haskins finished with 30 yards and a score on five carries, Nall with five yards on two carries and Bailey didn't have a carry.
• Once again Brent VanderVeen led the team with receptions. He was on the field a lot and getting more reps than just about everyone working with the first, second and third units.
• Freshman Paul Lucas did not play in the scrimmage, but was in pads.
• New Tradition: The team will sing the fight song after every single game, home and away.
