Saturday Night Practice re-cap

After Friday's scrimmage, the Oregon State football team held practice on Saturday evening. This practice had the normal limited media period.

1. Darell Garretson was sharp, Mason Moran was not

After a relatively average showing in Friday nights scrimmage, Darell Garretson looked very sharp during the team period. His passes were accurate and on time, giving receivers a chance to run after the catches. He made one beautiful throw on a deep corner route to Hunter Jarmon for a big gain. By my count he only threw two incomplete passes during the session, one of which was a perfect throw to Timmy Hernandez, but Hernandez dropped the ball, electing to use his body instead of his hands. Garretson even took off and ran for a 30+ yard gain.

Moran received most of the second team reps during the media session (that’s not to say he has jumped Marcus McMaryion on the depth chart) and there was a noticeable difference in the way he threw the ball compared to Garretson. Moran’s ball was coming out a little wobbly, and not as crisp as Garretson’s, which led to some poorly thrown incomplete passes.

2. Dime package put in place:

The defense worked in their dime package (six defensive backs on the field) today. That unit had Treston Decoud, Jay Irvine, Xavier Crawford, Devin Chappell, Shawn Wilson, and Brandon Arnold in the secondary; Caleb Saulo and Jonathan Willis at linebacker; Josh Robinett, Phillip Napoleon and Paesa Savea on the defensive line.

3. Pleased with how Seth Collins has come along:

Friday’s scrimmage provided a good glimpse into what Collins, a former quarterback, can do at wide receiver. He caught the ball in traffic well, and made some plays in the open field. The playmaking ability of Collins was never in question, it appeared to be a natural fit for a dynamic athlete such as Collins. While Brennan is pleased with that aspect of the game, Collins received praise from Kevin Cummings, who works with Brennen and the receivers.

“We were all kind of worried about whether he could transition to receiver because of the breaks, the details of being a receiver and learning the offense because it’s a bit different than quarterback,” Cummings said. “He’s handled it perfectly, he always asks us questions, and he’s a freak athlete so you put all that stuff together, his willingness to learn and his crazy athleticism it’s going to be hard to stop.
