Oregon State Practice Report: Beavers looking to correct mistakes
OSU was back on the practice field Tuesday which meant BeaversEdge.com was in Corvallis to get the scoop on the team before they take on Portland State. Football Analyst Marcus Greaves has the most newsworthy practice nuggets.
Practice Nuggets
-Today, Thomas Tyner and Artavis Pierce were getting more carries than they have been in the past. I believe this is to go back to the offense bread and butter from last season which is to run the ball. If they get each running back at least a little bit of sugar. It's going draw opponents linebackers up and force them to stack the box. Which then will give the offense the advantage in the passing game, and allow the offense as a whole to flourish.
-Jake Luton and the wide receivers were getting back to the basics in their own passing game. Luton looked sharp with his passes. But, whenever he would throw a deep pass he would meet with the intended receivers and discuss what needed to change about the pass. This is what the Beavers want, a leader who will understand his mistakes and fix them. I see this benefiting the Beavers greatly.
-Darell Garretson overthrew a handful of passes today, but his rollout passes and ability to run make Garretson deadly. Today, Garretson sliced through the defense for a big run. I like the thought of Garretson possibly being third down QB with his ability to run, and his ability the pass on the run. In a third and short situation the Beavers could utilize that to keep the defense true to their schemes. It's something the Beavers should keep in mind.
-The defense also looked like they went back to basic fundamentals today - understanding who they have and what they need to do. The defense will play assignment football. They do not want to give up wide open plays or have miscommunications like they did saturday, which meant practice today was full of repetition.
