Hailtheflattail asks: I know fundamentals (tackling) were all talk with the last staff but what have you seen with this staff that shows any different? They've somehow gotten worse so I'm hoping it's just the older players because that would be an easy fix and if it is I expect quite a bit more attrition in the offseason.
Slaughter: Tackling is a tricky thing. Oregon State has been a very poor tackling team for the past three seasons, and I think the new coaching staff is still working out a lot of those kinks with players that weren’t taught the proper fundamentals when it comes to tackling. While his defense hasn’t shown it in the first part of the season, I’m really high on defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar. He comes from a very strong pedigree and I think that once he gets extended coaching time with the current and eventual future team, the Beavers will have a solid defense. The process is right from what I was able to see in spring and fall camp, and it’s just a matter of the Beavers taking the final step and executing.
QBeaver asks: How many juco kids could we see on signing day for instant impact on the defensive line?
Singer: One or two. Fans want Oregon State to take 13 junior college defensive linemen in this class, but it's just not viable (obviously I'm kidding about 13 but you get the point). It can be difficult to get JC recruits into school, and there aren't as many Pac-12 level recruits on the defensive line as you'd think. And other big time schools want those recruits as well, so there's a lot of competition. With the offer to Nick Figueroa, it's clear that Oregon State wants a junior college guy on the D-line, but I don't think they're going to get three or more JC guys.
