Thursday marked the final day of preparation for Oregon State (1-5, 0-3) as the Beavers are now set to host California (3-3, 0-3) at Reser Stadium for Homecoming. OSU will be looking to build off their bye week by getting Jonathan Smith's first Pac-12 win.

BeaversEdge.com senior writer Brenden Slaughter was in Corvallis for Smith's Thursday media availability as Smith offered injury updates, thoughts on Cal, and more.

Let’s dive into some notes that we learned from Thursday’s availability

- The biggest news out of Thursday's practice was that head coach Jonathan Smith offered key injury updates for Saturday.

- Jake Luton, who's been out since the Nevada game, is 50-50 to play this Saturday per Smith and it really is a toss up. Smith added that Luton has been limited in the pocket in terms of his ability to move around

- Isaiah Hodgins, who suffered a hamstring injury against Arizona State, is also in that 50-50 boat as Smith noted that the Beavers wanted to see how he responded today and that there's a chance he could play.

- Isaiah Dunn has only played in the Nevada game this season as he's dealt this a knee injury and is also 50-50 per Smith. He's been participating in practice this week and when he spoke to the media on Wednesday, he was confident he was moving in the right direction.

- Jeromy Reichner, went through another full practice today and Smith noted that if he responds well, he's got a chance to play on Saturday.

- Out of all the potential players who could be making a return this weekend, Smith seemed the most confident about Reichner and Hodgins, adding that he's hopeful they'll have them both.

Smith on the Beavers' approach this week following the bye

There was some really good energy on Sunday and Tuesday particularly," Smith said. "Each week our preparation has been solid, now we just have to play for 60 minutes out here on Saturday."

Smith on how creating turnovers can be a domino effect

"It starts with one," Smith said. "Ideally it starts with one and you get some momentum going and it turns into bunches. It totally changes the game and so if we can create some on defense, and keep holding onto it on offense we'll be in good shape. It's been an emphasis since the start of fall camp and we're hoping it shows up on Saturday."

Smith on the retro Benny Beaver and the uniforms

"They're really excited about the new look," Smith said while donning his retro Benny hoodie. "It's really exciting for them with all the gear, but it's still all about playing football."

Smith on how a win against Cal could build momentum into the back half of the season

"A win is huge and that's why we play every Saturday, because we're trying to win the game," Smith said. "This Saturday presents another great opportunity against a quality opponent, we're back at home, and we want to take advantage of it."

Smith on Cal's offense being a tale of two teams this season

"When you turn the ball over, it's hard to get anything going offensively," Smith said of Cal's offense. "They're scary because if they get that fixed they can move the ball. We're planning on getting their best on Saturday."
