In surprising news, Oregon State wide receiver Hunter Jarmon is leaving the Oregon State football program to pursue a career in Major League Baseball.

“I want to thank Beaver Nation for the opportunity to represent OSU on and off the field,” Jarmon said. “My coaches and teammates have been very supportive of my decision to pursue my baseball career, and I wish them continued success. Go Beavs!”

Jarmon signed with the San Diego Padres baseball organization as an undrafted free agent.

The 5-foot-11, 194-pounder from Texas had a less than stellar junior season as he caught just five passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. However, Jarmon had a fantastic spring and really gelled with Jake Luton, the favorite for the quarterback race.

“He was easily OSU’s best receiver in spring practice, and even earned the nod of MVP in our position recap," BeaversEdge.com senior writer Brenden Slaughter said. "Even more shocking is that he’s leaving on an undrafted free agent deal for the Padres. He tried baseball for a bit at OSU, and he didn’t pan out. I’m surprised by this move. I believe his potential lies on the football field.”

Oregon State still has a talented receiving corps with Jordan Villamin, Timmy Hernandez, Trevon Bradford, Isaiah Hodgins, and Xavier Crawford (Seth Collins as well if he's healthy enough to play).

“We 100 percent support Hunter’s decision to pursue this tremendous opportunity of a baseball career at this time in his life,” head coach Gary Andersen said. “He is a quality young man and we wish him the very best in pursuing this course.”
