ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Oregon State offensive lineman Gavin Andrews was one of five true freshman that played for Oregon State in 2012, and he played mostly on special teams his sophomore year after missing the beginning of the season with mono.
Andrews started 10 games his junior and battled through injuries as well. Before his senior year even got started, he suffered a foot injury - using his redshirt year.
The 6-foot-6, 327-pound warrior started all 12 games for the Beavers in 2016.
On Saturday, Andrews played in the East-West Shrine Game and started at right guard and also played a lot of center. It was his last time wearing his Oregon State helmet, which was a special moment for him.
"It was beautiful. I loved it," Andrews told BeaversEdge.com. "I'm going to miss this helmet a lot. Hopefully I get to keep this one. It's something I'm going to miss for the rest of my life."
Andrews' last game in Corvallis was a special one as the Beavs knocked off Oregon for the first time in the Civil War since 2007. He is still riding a high from winning that game.
"Oh, absolutely. It's a new feeling," Andrews said. "[My class] had never won the Civil War before, so to go out like that my senior year, it was a truly awesome feeling.
"Winning the Civil War is the pinnacle of turning the leaf. The program is coming back."
Andrews will now prepare his best for whatever life hands him next. He hopes that it involves wearing shoulder pads.
"I've had a lot of interest [from NFL teams]. I just really want to play football," he said. "I'm out here fighting for my dream, and I feel like I have a good opportunity with what I can bring to the table."
