Day 12 Scrimmage Notes

LIGHT DAY FOR GARRETSON, TONS OF REPS FOR MCMARYION & MORAN

It was a short day for quarterback Darell Garretson, who only worked the first couple of series and was not under center when the defense went live. With limited reps from the starter, Marcus McMaryion and Mason Moran received a bulk of the snaps.

After practice head coach Gary Andersen said that this has been McMayion’s best week of practice, putting together a string of good practices for the first time this season. He finished 5-8 for 67 yards. He did make some impressive throws where he threaded the needle between the corners and the safety for nice pickups.

Moran's day started off rough, one of the first passes he threw was intercepted by Kendall Hill. Moran had locked onto his receiver allowing Hill to get a good jump on the ball. What impressed Coach Andersen following the scrimmage was Moran’s short memory. Despite throwing the pick he remained composed and had one of his better days according to Andersen.

HAIL MARY

About midway through the scrimmage, the offense lined up for a hail mary. Kendall Hill, Bright Ugwoegbu and Treston Decoud toed the goal line as the last line of defense. McMaryion launched a pass from midfield, and it appeared like Ugwoegbu had an easy interception. However, Ugwoegbu elected to bat the ball down, but he batted the ball off his leg which popped the ball right into Hunter Jarmon’s arms for a touchdown. After the play as the defense came off the field a coach yelled (likely Clune) “that’s why we practice these plays.”

POUNDING THE ROCK

The OSU offense ran 70 plays during the scrimmage, a lot of those plays were running plays. Tim Cook and Artavis Pierce each carried the ball for more than 40 yards, Mason Moran was able to pick up nice chunk of yards with his feet.

Kyle White has switched from running back to corner to help a secondary that’s taken a few hits the last week. He played seven snaps at corner in the scrimmage. With White moving from running back, an OSU spokesperson told me that likely means Artavis Pierce will not redshirt.

OTHER NOTES

Early Scrimmage teams: First defense: DB’s: Xavier Crawford, Landry Payne, Devin Chappell, Treston Decoud. LB’s: Manase Hungalu, Caleb Saulo, Bright Ugwoegbu, Titus Failauga. DL: Paisa Savea, Elu Aydon, Phillip Napoleon.

Kendall Hill, Omar Hicks-Onu, Shawn Wilson, Sumner Houston, Kalani Vakameilalo and Noke Tago rotated in.

No surprises with first team offense, other than the receivers going with four wideouts with Seth Collins, Hunter Jarmon, Jordan Villamin and Victor Bolden rounding out that group.

Dwayne Williams, Jay Irvine, Brandon Arnold, Ricky Liuchan were absent from the defensive. Sean Harlow and Will Hopkins did not dress down.

NFL scouts from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Phoenix Cardinals and Chicago Bears were in attendance.

Paul Lucas took a kickoff the to the house. The team worked quite a bit on returns with Tim Cook and Artavis Pierce back deep. Seth Collins was back returning kicks.

Coach Brennan was working with punter Nick Porebski to make sure that he stays within the shield that the line makes on punts. Porebski was drifting too far outside the shield with his rugby kicks.

Garrett Owens had a nice day kicking the ball, connecting on 4-of-6 kicks all of which were 40+ yards.

Jalen Moore was someone who caught my eye. He made a couple of stops in the backfield when the offense was on the goal line and defended the pass well. He was just around the ball a ton.

Tight end Kenny Turnier was helped off the field after a special teams play. On the sideline he was getting his left knee looked at.

A couple of botched quarterback-center exchanges. Yanni Demogerontas snapped a ball slightly low to McMaryion, but McMaryion dropped the ball. Kammy Delp then skipped a snap to Moran that barely made it off the ground.
