Just yesterdayBeaverBlitzreleased an updated War Room and Watch List including a new #1 target. On Wednesday the Beaver coaches received news that one of Oregon's top prospects plans to join the Orange & Black.
With a handful of offers on the table Bend (Ore.) Mountain View linebacker Joel Skotte had already narrowed his list to Oregon State, Boise State and the Air Force Academy. On Wednesday, just days before the start of his senior season with the Cougars, he decided the time was right to make the call.
"I think I've known for all along, but I had a good long talk with one of our coaches today and he said that it seemed like I knew where I wanted to go," Skotte said. "I just wanted to get it done before the start of our season."
"I called Coach Locey and he handed the phone over to Coach Riley," he continued. "Coach Riley was just really excited and said how it was a good day to be a Beaver and I could hear the staff cheering in the background."
The Cougars travel to Eagle Point for Friday's game, but Skotte said that he hoped to make an unofficial visit or two during the season and also take his official visit to campus as well.
With the Beavers on a roll of sorts on the recruiting trail, Skotte said that he is excited to get to know some of the others that will be joining him in the 2012 class. He has met Isaac Seumalo and Maximo Espitia and he hopes to get to know some of the other guys soon too.
"My parents are happy that I made my decision," he said. "My Dad is an Air Force grad and played at Air Force so he had his opinion, but he definitely likes that I don't have to worry about it. My Mom is behind me all the way and is excited to meet Coach Riley."
While he respected all of the coaches that he met through the recruiting process, Coach Riley and his staff stood out.
"Coach Riley is just the most genuine guy," he said. "He just has more on his mind than winning every game and he definitely cares about his players. There is just a lot of integrity with the coaching staff. Not that the other schools didn't have integrity, I guess it is just that Oregon State felt more like home."
Now that he's committed he is focusing on helping his teammates go as far as possible in the Oregon 5A ranks. But he's already thinking a little ahead to next fall.
"I'm definitely going to have the mindset that I'm going to come in and play as a freshman," Skotte said. "I'd be happy to redshirt though as I'd get five years with the Beavers that way. If redshirting get me to a better position to play four years then that will be fine too."
BeaverBlitz.com will follow Skotte and the rest of the 2012 commits throughout their senior season with our popular Following the Future feature. Stay tuned for all the latest from Corvallis and the recruiting trail.
