BeaversEdge Q&A with OSU signee Craig Evans

Yuma (Ariz.) Arizona Western defensive tackle Craig Evans is officially a Beaver as he signed with Oregon State last Wednesday.

Evans spoke with BeaversEdge.com in this Q&A segment about why he chose OSU and much, much more.

How long have you known that you would end up at Oregon State?

Evans: "I actually gave coach A [Gary Andersen] my word back when I officially visited [on September 24]. I under the radar committed to him - just him. You know the process - he knew that I was still trying to make sure I made the right decision. I wanted to see Kentucky and what those guys had to offer, but I committed back when I took my official. It was just to coach A."

Back when you were in high school, you had a couple of decommitments. So did you really just want to weigh out your options this time around?

Evans: "Yeah, I knew I would end up with them. I didn't know what could possibly sell me from that. I already knew I'd be going into great hands and be taken care of well. I wasn't even worried about that before I got there. The only thing left for me to see was what the place was like socially."

How important was your relationship with Andersen in leading you to signing with Oregon State?

Evans: "Coach A, long story short, he's like a pops to me. Back when he was recruiting me at Wisconsin, one thing that attracted me to him a lot was his how authentic he was. He never cut me short on any corners. He saw my grades, told me what I have to do to get in, saw how I played, and he was just so real about everything since I met him. He's a guy that's hard not to like. He's a lovable guy. We can relate about a lot of things. He's seen a lot during his coaching career and has had a lot of trials and tribulations. And then once I got to Arizona Western, I made it big to myself to give the most interest to the school that offers first. It was OSU. It was just amazing how everything worked out, and me and coach A have been rocking for a long time. It's an honor to finally be able to play for him."

They actually don't have an assistant coach that coaches the defensive line; it's coach Andersen that coaches the group. Have you guys had conversations about how he'll be your position coach?
