Beavers turn the ball over 27 times in loss to Lamar

The Oregon State Beavers Men's Basketball team lost their first game of the season on Wednesday.

OSU fell at home to Lamar, 63-60. The story of the game was that Oregon State had way too many self inflicted wounds with 27 turnovers, and Lamar played much more physical than Oregon state.

"Tough loss. I'll give them a lot of credit," OSU head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "They came out and - I told the guys in the locker room, it was a little bit of a woodshed job there. They were tougher than us mentally and physically. Our guys didn't respond. We knew they were going to play that way, and we lost the fight. Our teams don't lose fights, so shame on us.

"With all of that being said, we had a chance down the stretch to win a game that we turned the ball over 27 times. That's probably a school record. We miss a layup, we miss a dunk, we miss some free throws or we'll able to pull that out. I don't know if we'd feel any better other than yeah it'd be a W and not an L, but I'm very disappointed."

Looking at the stat sheet, it's not like Lamar had a lights out shooting game to knock off Oregon State. Lamar shot just 28% from the field and 15-of-24 from the free throw line.

However, Lamar turned the ball over just nine times, while OSU had exactly three times as many turnovers.

"I guess we'll have to do more ball handling drills," Tinkle said.

During the postgame press conference following the Beavs' 72-64 victory over UTSA on Sunday, Tinkle said that his son, Tres Tinkle, can't play as many minutes as he's been playing this season. Tinkle played 38 minutes against UTSA on Sunday.

Wednesday night against Lamar, Tinkle still played 36 minutes, and unlike the first two games of the season, he didn't play very well. He finished with nine points on 1-7 shooting and eight rebounds.

"They were physical with him, and he just wasn't at his best obviously," Wayne Tinkle said about Tres.

Tres Tinkle has to be heavily relied upon as an offensive weapon with starting shooting guard Stevie Thompson Jr. out with a foot injury.

"He's got to get healthy," Tinkle said. "Right now, it's day to day, so there's no timetable there. Obviously, he could help us, so we hope he gets back there."

Next up for OSU, they travel to play Nevada at 7 PM in a game that can be seen on ESPN3.

"This will tell us a lot about ourselves," Wayne Tinkle said. "We got pistol whipped today, and we play a very talented team for our first road game on Friday."

Starting power forward Drew Eubanks led the Beavers with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman guard Jaquori McLaughlin scored 15 points and a had a big three point shot late in the game to pull OSU within three points.
