Beaver offense comes alive in 61-10 victory

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Sean Canfield threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns, Sammie Stroughter had 160 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and Oregon State cruised to a 61-10 win over Idaho State Saturday.

Canfield might have cemented his status as the Beavers' starter with his performance, completing 21 of 30 passes before making way for Lyle Moevao in the third quarter. Anthony Brown had 156 yards receiving.

The Beavers (2-1) came out and immediately established the passing game that had been missing against Utah and Cincinnati. Canfield threw 14 times for 198 yards in the first quarter and the Beavers ran the ball just four times.

Canfield connected with Stroughter six times on the Beavers' first three drives. A third-team All-American last year, the senior wide receiver and punt returner sat out much of fall camp for personal reasons and missed Oregon State's opener. He was rusty in the Cincinnati loss, dropping some balls and muffing a punt that set up a Bearcats touchdown.

The Beavers finished with 607 total yards -- 175 were on the ground.

Idaho State is 3-24 is against teams from the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A. The Bengals play in the Big Sky Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision.

Russel Hill was 23-of-38 for 295 yards and four interceptions for the Bengals (1-1), who entered the game off a 37-11 win over Southern Oregon. Eddie Thompson had 12 receptions for 174 yards, both career highs.

The Beavers had won five straight across two seasons before losing at Cincinnati. The Bearcats won 34-3 and Canfield and Moevao each threw three interceptions.

Against the Bengals, Oregon State struck early, with Brown catching a 41-yard pass on the team's first offensive play. Five plays later Yvenson Bernard ran in a 3-yard touchdown. Stroughter caught a 48-yard TD pass and fullback Andy Stewart punched in a 1-yarder to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.

Down 28-0 late in the second quarter, Hill drove the Bengals deep into Oregon State territory, but Keenan Lewis intercepted a pass in the end zone. On the next drive, Hill engineered an eight-play, 53-yard drive that Branden Jones capped with a 26-yard field goal at the end of the half.

The Beavers led 47-3 after a safety, a field goal and touchdowns by Stroughter and running back Clinton Polk.

Hill hit Josh Barnett for a 47-yard TD pass early in the fourth for the Bengals.
