Beavs eye local center

A rising senior out of Troutdale's Reynolds High, Drew Eubanks is a rare athlete. He's a fluid, above-the-rim hoopster on the hardwood and a hard-throwing, second-team all-state performer on the diamond.

Several outstanding performances in Los Angeles over the past few days have many speculating Eubanks might have the highest ceiling in basketball, however.

Rivals National Analyst Eric Bossi recently compared the 6'10" big to California's David Kravish, and the analogy isn't far off. Most, though, see superior athleticism in Eubanks. He needs time in the weight room and on the practice floor to polish his craft, but the tools are there to become elite.

On June 26th, Eubanks visited with the Beavers' new staff in Corvallis and Coaches Wayne Tinkle, Gregg Gottlieb, and Stephen Thompson all watched the power forward/center play in Southern California this past week (Assistant Kerry Rupp is in Dallas).

"Oregon State, Gonzaga, Washington State, Purdue, Portland, Santa Clara, San Diego State - those are probably the schools I'm talking to the most," Eubanks told BeaverBlitz on Saturday. "I'm planning to make my decision in August… Distance does probably matter. If I was going to school on the east coast then my parents would have to be flying out to see me every time I played. That could be tough."

Baseball, too, is a consideration. Standing nearly 7-feet atop the pitcher's mound, Eubanks said he'd like to play both basketball and baseball in college, if possible. He'll focus on finishing the AAU season next week in Las Vegas, then get down to determining the best college fit for him.

And when he looks to the sideline a week from now, you can bet the Beavers will be front and center.
