Beavs Land First Commit

Nick Mitchell has had Oregon State as a dream school for awhile and once they offered last month, committing has been in the back of his mind. On Friday, while visiting practice, the 6-foot-2, 190 pound quarterback decided that the time was right to become the first commitment to the class of 2014.

"I had planned to come down to Corvallis for awhile, but I didn't know that I was going to commit until last weekend," Mitchell said. "Once they offered, it has been in the back of my mind, but after talking to both of my brothers I decided to go ahead and commit. My whole family is excited."

Mitchell's older brother Josh is a sophomore offensive lineman for the Beavers and he is familiar with the program and the staff.

Friday after practice, Mitchell and his Dad were meeting with Coach Riley in his office when they told him the news. They then went next door to tell offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf.

He plans to take part in the Northwest Elite Camp in Mercer Island, Washington as well as the the Elite 11 regional camp in Chicago in May. Depending on that camp, he may camp in Corvallis at Oregon State's quarterback camp this summer.

There is still a chance that the Beavers take a second quarterback in the class, something that doesn't scare Mitchell.

"They told me that there is a possibility they the may take two quarterbacks and that is fine with me," he said. "I'll be competing either way either with older guys or the new guys that come in. There is always going to be competition."

Mitchell is currently unranked by Rivals.com, but that should change in the near future. Oregon State was his first and only offer at the time of his commitment, but he was receiving attention from Washington, Washington State, Colorado State, Boise State, and Arizona State.

"I am completely solid as a Beaver, and I'm definitely going to try to recruit other guys to my class," he said. "It feels great and is a huge sigh of relief for me to now focus on our senior season now that I've committed."
