Tight Ends still matter in Florida

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

As we take a look on the offensive side of the ball, perhaps the one skill position that gets overlooked the most is the tight end. Used mostly for blocking and pass protection at times, the tight end is an invaluable member of the offense. Here's a look at five true tight ends to watch in Florida for the class of 2013.

Top 2013 Tight Ends

Mike Heuerman
Tight End
6-foot-4 |210 | Barron Collier (Naples)
Buzz: Heuerman has the size and speed to make an impact as a wide receiver, and earned a four-star rating from Rivals.com at tight end. His 40 time is 4.76, with a max bench press of 285 and a max squat of 385 pounds. His blocking technique is strong - which has resulted in several offers for the early grad (he's set to graduate in December, 2012). He just missed the Rivals250, but should make the FlaVarsity 150 with relative ease.
Schools in the mix: Florida State, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn (14 total offers)

Kyle Chung
Tight End
6-foot-3 |245 | Ponte Vedra
Buzz: Chung was the go-to guy for QB Perry Orth when the Sharks had to have the tough yards. He and the Sharks made it to the third round of the post-season before bowing out to 5A state runner-up Wakulla on the road. The offense for the Sharks was run-first, so Chung got his share of blocking assignments for RB Cole Mazza (another 2013 player to watch). He has good speed for a tight end, with a 4.76 time in the 40.
Schools in the mix: Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Miami, Tennessee, Florida State (7 total)
A.J. Sattinger
Tight End
6-foot-3| 225 | Countryside (Clearwater)
Buzz: Sattinger first drew attention when he was named the National Underclassmen Combine MVP last spring. His route-running is by far his strength and his mobility is nothing to sneeze at. His speed is comparable to other tight ends (4.78 in the 40). He's getting looks from several schools and will need a strong senior season. The loss of QB Gray Crow could be a detractor - or not.
Schools in the mix:Ohio, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Georgia (11 total)

Tyler Provo
Tight End
6-foot-2|235 | American Heritage (Delray Beach)
Buzz: Part of the juggernaut football team that took Glades Central to over time and downed Madison County 30-3 in the 4A state title game, Provo contributes both offensively and on special teams. His blocking technique opened holes all day for Greg Bryant and company to run rough-shod over a Cowboy defense that has not been moved like that in the past.
Schools in the mix:Central Florida, Miami, Syracuse, Georgia
Garrett Hudson
Tight End
6-foot-3 |235 | North Florida Christian (Tallahassee)
Buzz: Hudson is a multiple threat - whether at tight end, full back or half back for the Eagles. He has also lined up in the slot a few times and has the height and speed to get open and make a defender miss. His size and quickness are assets. He is a two-way player, lining up at Inside linebacker on defense. Hudson caught 21 passes for 245 yards last year for the unbeaten 2A champions.
Others in the mix:

Brian Griggs, Oviedo
Matt Burke,West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman
Devon Speight,Miami Northwestern
Garrett Rothenberg, Deltona
Taylor Marini,Lake Mary
