Spring Preview: Offensive Backfield
After a year of playing 'Who Will Be the QB,' Oregon State enters the 2014 season with Sean Mannion entrenched as the starter. No games, no wondering everyday. Mannion is the guy.
Now looking deeper, the back-up position is a little more wide open and frankly scary. Redshirt sophomore Brent VanderVeen appears to be the heir apparent for back-up duties, but the arrival of Alabama transfer Luke Del Rio will keep things interesting. Del Rio will take part in spring drills, but as of now, will have to sit out the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules. An appeal is in process, but has not been approved yet.
In speaking with staff from TideSports.com, Del Rio was well-respected at Alabama and many felt that he could come in and compete for the opening left by A.J. McCarron. Alabama however picked up the transfer of quarterback Jacob Coker from FSU, and has five other highly rated quarterbacks competing for the opening.
