Riley talks about ASU loss

Mike Riley has been a football coach in some capacity for nearly 40 years, so he has experienced countless times the seemingly never-ending cycle of ups-and-downs that go along with the demanding profession.

Saturday night's 30-17 loss at Arizona State qualifies as a major downer.

Riley's gloominess was apparent during his typical post-game press conference. His answers were brief and he often stared straight ahead after the frustrating loss in the desert dropped Oregon State to 6-4.

Sunday night, Riley seemed to be in a little better mood, but he realizes squandered opportunities and costly mistakes at critical junctures (five turnovers) led directly to the Beavers' third straight setback.

"I felt bad for our players," Riley said. "The defense really played a good game against a very explosive offense and overall did a really good job. We were playing a good defensive team, but we just stumbled around (390 total yards) and made too many mistakes (on offense) to beat a good team. We absolutely messed up a good opportunity.
