Ben Howland reflects upon season

Tuesday March 24th, UCLA head basketball coach Ben Howland met with the media for the last time to discuss the just concluded season of 2008-09. This is the earliest exit out of the big March dance in three years and he is asked about that and more. This part one of a two-part series.

Howland: "Welcome, so we're in our last official press meeting, questions?"

Is it strange to be doing this so early?

Howland: "We haven't done this the last three years. It would be nice to go that far every year, so it is a little different."

Have you watched film of the game?

Howland: "I watched it on the way back, the day we played on Saturday. I watched it a couple of times."

Any thoughts now with some perspective?

Howland: "In reference to what? Specifically…"

How you played?

Howland: "Well I commented on that at the game ending. I didn't think we played very good and they played very well. I think Villanova is a very good team and I thought that their plan to come out and hard foul our guys was evident especially as you watch the film, but they are a very good team. I have to credit them and I think they have a chance to come out of the region now.

"When you get to this level, you have to beat Duke and you have to beat the winner of Xavier and Pitt. I mean anybody can come out of it essentially, but they are good. If they came out of the region I wouldn't be surprised."
