Beavers go around UCLA for crucial victory
Gazette-Times
Sound-off: The Lodge | Beaver Nation

It should have been an easy contest, but where's the fun in that? The Oregon State football team played a well-rounded game for three-plus quarters Saturday afternoon, but still needed to rally for the win in the final seconds. James Rodgers scored the game-winning touchdown with 44 seconds left on a 17-yard end-around, and the Beavers defeated Pacific-10 Conference rival UCLA 26-19 before a crowd of 41,009 in Reser Stadium. "The guys did a great job up front blocking, and so did the receivers down field," Rodgers said. "Coach (Mike Riley) has been harping on that a lot, for the receivers to make touchdown blocks and we made some today."

Given what the Rodgers brothers, James and Jacquizz, have accomplished in their season-and-a-half together at Oregon State, it's to imagine them finding more ways to make the Beavers' offense go. James, a junior wide receiver, went into Saturday's Pac-10 football game against UCLA leading the conference in receiving yardage and all-purpose yardage. Jacquizz, a sophomore running back, was second in rushing yardage and all-purpose yardage. But in the Beavers' 26-19 victory over the Bruins at Reser Stadium, the duo added some new wrinkles.

Mike Riley asks Quizz if he wants to warm up with quarterbacks but there would have been no joking if OSU had blown UCLA game

Oregon State coach Mike Riley jokingly asked tailback Jacquizz Rodgers if he wanted to warm up with the quarterbacks on Sunday, seeing as how Quizz threw the first touchdown pass of his career less than 24 hours earlier, a 14-yarder to tight end Brady Camp out of the Wildcat formation.

Four Oregon State players scored in double figures while the defense forced 22 Southern Oregon turnovers as the Beavers cruised to a 94-53 win over the Raiders in the men's basketball exhibition opener on Sunday. "It's nice to win the games you are supposed to win. Last year we had a tough time with our first exhibition game and this was a nice change from last year," head coach Craig Robinson said. "It was good to see the guys take the early part of this game very seriously. What you got to see today is that the depth is really going to help us this season." Oregon State cruised from the opening tip, scoring the first eight points of the contest. Southern Oregon cut the lead to 12-8 with 13:38 left in the first half; however, the Beavers would go on a 24-4 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game away. Omari Johnson led four Oregon State players in double figures with 16 points as the junior connected on 6-of-8 from the floor. Seth Tarver poured in 15 (4-of-5), Calvin Haynes had 13 (5-of-9) and Josh Tarver added 11 (4-of-6) as 12 played scored for Oregon State in the victory.

Bowl goal requires road map

Still a win away from being bowl eligible, Oregon State's postseason destination will largely be determined on the road, where the Beavers will be playing three of their final four games of the regular season. While OSU coach Mike Riley said his thoughts won't stray far from preparing for Saturday's game at No. 23 California, "I did tell our team we can accomplish a lot (this season). Whatever that is depends on what we do each week.

Just a couple days after I write that OSU fans need not worry about the future of the running back spot at Oregon State, Beavers commit Malcolm Marable scores four touchdowns as Bishop Alemany cruises to a 48-21 win over Chaminade. Marable carried 23 times for 188 yards and caught two passes for 65 yards. Thank you for not making me look like an idiot, Malcolm.

Cliff: Sunday night football notes
Gazette-Times
Sound-off: The Lodge | Beaver Nation

Oregon State football coach Mike Riley was in a good mood Sunday night, coming off the victory over UCLA on Saturday. The first thing he wanted to know about was how the men's basketball team looked in its first exhibition. Then he got into his team. WR James Rodgers bruised his foot in the game. He didn't work out with the team Sunday, but is expected to be in practice Tuesday. CB Tim Clark left the game late due to headaches, but it is not officially a concussion. OT Timi Oshinowo will try to return to practice this week, but is far from game ready. OT Wilder McAndrews (finger) returned late last week after his extended recovery from a wrist injury was put on pause.

The Beavers opened up the 2009-2010 campaign with a 94-53 exhibition win over the Southern Oregon Raiders. The 41 point victory was very different from last year's exhibition opener, when the Beavers only defeated Saint Martin's by four points. The game was played on a cloudy Sunday afternoon in Corvallis, in front of 2,745 people at Gill Coliseum.

The "Wild Flying Beaver" came out of mad scientist Mike Riley's lab on Halloween, and considering the Beavers were only able to get Justin Kahut field goal attempts out of five of their other six scoring opportunities, it turned out to be critical to Oregon State's 26-19 win over UCLA.

Oregon State's beleaguered secondary probably won't want to hear this, but California quarterback Kevin Riley is playing his best football. The junior from Beaverton High School threw for 351 yards Saturday in the Golden Bears' 23-21 victory at Arizona State, and engineered Cal's 74-yard, 11-play drive late in the fourth quarter to set up Giorgio Tavecchio's game-winning field goal.
